Has anyone else noticed that President Obama resembles a car salesman in his polished presentations to getting legislation passed?
The first technique he uses is a powerful combination maneuver any rookie salesmen straight out of training school knows: defining a need and capitalizing on fear.
Take the case of the Stimulus package. He presents the public with a picture of how life will be like, driving that new car down the highway, i.e., passing the stimulus and driving past reinvigorated industries and businesses, and simultaneously frightens us with the consequences of what will happen should we not take his advice.
As it turns out, the Stimulus package was nothing more than a collection of every liberal wet-dream spending project that has been sitting in DC drawers for the past 40 years.
But Obama didn’t focus on that.
Like a good car salesmen, he focused instead on the plush interior of moving past the recession, the smooth acceleration to increased jobs, the car’s ability to take us to a better place, where there is no penalty for bad decisions or acknowledgement of the individual.
In the car Obama is selling, we all go from 0-60 together, as one, with no discernible differences of ability or passion, just a friendly jaunt in a new car that Mr. Obama is selling.
Another technique Obama uses is the sense of urgency tactic. Here he tells us that we must act right away. No time to call the wife and get her opinion on this expensive vehicle (read the damn bill), no time to check with the bank to see if we have the money to pay for it, no. We need to act fast so we can remain numb and happy in the false belief that we just made a smart decision.
If these tactics do not work, Obama then invokes the authoritarian approach. Here he chooses his words more carefully, the tone begins to change, and he moves from asking/selling to demanding and petulant.
Leader? No. Obama is a salesman, and not a very good one at that. A good salesman would have the interests of his customers/pubic in mind; a bad salesman just wants another sale.
I’m quite sure that Obama would do very well selling cars on a lot. Unfortunately, he has no job experience so getting that position might be a bit difficult.
